Living at Breitwiesen

Weingarten (Baden)

Competition 3rd prize

A contemporary housing development with high architectural standards and sustainable construction is to be built in the municipality of Weingarten (Baden) in the district of Karlsruhe. To this end, a disused area of around 3.6 hectares, some of which was formerly used for commercial purposes, is being repurposed. In the competition organised by Hoepfner Cherverny Liegenschaften GmbH & Co. KG, the jury evaluated six entries. The design by schneider+schumacher with Rainer Schmidt Landschaftsarchitekten was awarded third prize, with the jury particularly praising the architectural appeal of the houses and the design of the neighbourhood squares.

The design is for a nature-oriented urban quarter for young families with various building plots grouped around open spaces with lots of greenery and extensive tree planting. The overarching ideal is sustainable urban development and climate-resilient construction. Simple, compact construction methods combined with a serial building approach play a key role in this. The buildings are largely prefabricated in the factory using timber frame construction and erected on the solid base of the underground car park.

The mix of approximately 240 apartments consists of two- to four-room flats. Flexible building structures and floor plans offer a wide range of uses, while lively ground floor areas along the neighbourhood square enrich the district with amenities such as a bakery, homework and neighbourhood assistance, co-working and a neighbourhood meeting place.
